How to convert HEIC to JPG on any device

iPhones save photos as HEIC, and half the world's apps still can't open them. Here's how to turn them into normal JPGs on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, and how to stop the problem at the source.

Short answer

The quickest way to convert HEIC to JPG on any device is a browser converter: open KitFuse HEIC to JPG, add your photos and download the JPGs, with nothing uploaded. On a Mac you can also use Preview (File › Export › JPEG). To stop getting HEIC files, set your iPhone to Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible.

What is a HEIC file, and why can't I open it?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format Apple adopted in iOS 11. It uses the same compression technology as HEVC video, so a photo takes roughly half the space of a JPG at similar quality. That's great for your phone's storage, which is why it's the default.

The trouble starts when the photo leaves the Apple world. Many Windows PCs need an extra extension to read HEIC, older Android phones and smart TVs can't show it, and plenty of websites, print shops, government forms and HR portals only accept JPG or PNG. Converting to JPG fixes all of that at once.

Convert HEIC to JPG in your browser (Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone)

  1. Open the converter.

Go to kitfuse.pro/heic-to-jpg in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.

  2. Add your HEIC photos.

Drag them in or tap Choose HEIC photos. You can add up to 100 at once. Outside Safari, a small decoder (about 1 MB) loads once to read HEIC.

  3. Keep JPG selected.

Photos convert automatically at 92 percent quality. Pick PNG or WebP instead if you need them.

  4. Download.

Save each JPG or press Download all (ZIP). The JPGs contain no GPS location or camera details.

How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 and 11

Windows can open HEIC once two extensions from the Microsoft Store are installed: HEIF Image Extensions (free) and HEVC Video Extensions (a small fee in many regions; some PCs ship with it). With both installed, the Photos app and Paint can display HEIC files.

  1. Right-click the HEIC file and choose Open with › Paint.
  2. Choose File › Save as › JPEG picture, pick a folder and save.

That works one photo at a time. For a folder of photos, or on a PC where you can't install extensions (a work laptop, for example), the browser converter is faster: it handles a whole batch and needs no installation.

How to convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac

Macs read HEIC natively, so you have two built-in options:

  • Preview: open the photo, choose File › Export, set Format to JPEG, adjust the quality slider and save. To convert several, select them all in Preview's sidebar first.
  • Finder Quick Action (macOS Monterey and later): select the photos in Finder, right-click and choose Quick Actions › Convert Image, then pick JPEG and a size.

The Photos app can also export: select photos, choose File › Export › Export Photos and set the type to JPEG.

How to get JPGs from an iPhone or iPad

Stop new photos being saved as HEIC

Open Settings › Camera › Formats and choose Most Compatible. From now on the camera saves JPG (and H.264 video). Photos take more space, so leave it on High Efficiency if storage is tight and convert only when you share.

Convert automatically when copying to a computer

Under Settings › Photos › Transfer to Mac or PC, choose Automatic. When you import photos over a cable, the iPhone hands them over as JPG.

Convert photos that are already HEIC

Open Safari, go to the HEIC to JPG converter and choose photos from your library. The JPGs can be saved straight back to Photos or Files with the share button.

How to convert HEIC to JPG on Android

Recent Android phones and Google Photos can display HEIC, but most phones can't save a JPG copy without a third-party app. The simplest route is the browser: open the converter in Chrome, pick the HEIC files from your downloads or Drive, and download the JPGs. If someone sends you HEIC files regularly, ask them to switch their iPhone to Most Compatible.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

Every conversion re-encodes the picture, but at 90 to 95 percent JPEG quality the difference is not visible. What does change is size: a JPG is usually 1.5 to 2 times larger than the HEIC it came from, because JPG compression is older and less efficient. A few HEIC features don't survive the trip:

  • Live Photos become still images; the short video stored alongside isn't part of the HEIC.
  • Depth data and portrait effects stored for later editing are dropped; the picture you see is kept.
  • Wide-color (Display P3) images may look very slightly less saturated in some apps after conversion.

If you'd rather keep the HEIC but remove its location before sharing, the metadata remover cleans HEIC files without converting them.

Frequently asked questions

Is HEIC better than JPG?

HEIC stores the same picture in about half the space and supports 16-bit color and transparency. JPG is far more compatible. Keep HEIC on your phone and convert copies to JPG when sharing.

Why do my iPhone photos show as JPG when I email them?

iOS often converts HEIC to JPG automatically when sharing to apps or services that might not support HEIC, such as Mail. Files saved from the Files app or AirDropped to a Mac usually stay HEIC.

Can I convert HEIC to JPG without installing software?

Yes. A browser converter works on any computer or phone without installing anything. KitFuse also processes the photos on your device, so they're not uploaded.

Will the JPG keep the photo's date and location?

Not with KitFuse, which saves JPGs without EXIF data so the GPS location doesn't travel with the copy. Preview and Photos keep the metadata unless you turn it off when exporting.

How do I convert many HEIC files at once?

Add them all to the converter (up to 100 per batch) and download a single ZIP. On a Mac, the Finder Quick Action also converts a selection in one go.

Convert your HEIC photos now

Drop up to 100 HEIC photos and get JPGs back in seconds. Nothing is uploaded, and the GPS location is removed too.
