How to open WebP files and save them as JPG or PNG

You saved a picture from a website and got a .webp file that your app refuses to open. Here's what WebP is, how to view it on any device, and the quickest way to turn it into an ordinary JPG or PNG.

Short answer

Any modern web browser opens WebP files: drag the file into Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. To use the picture in an app, form or older program that rejects WebP, convert it with KitFuse WebP to JPG (or WebP to PNG to keep transparency). The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

What is a WebP file?

WebP is an image format created by Google to make web pages load faster. It stores the same picture in a smaller file than JPG or PNG, supports transparency and animation, and every current browser displays it. That's why so many websites now serve their images as WebP, and why "Save image as" often hands you a .webp file even though the page looked ordinary.

The format itself is fine. The problem is that some software outside the browser still doesn't understand it: older photo viewers and editors, some print services, office tools, email clients and countless upload forms that only list JPG and PNG.

How to open a WebP file on any device

Windows

Recent versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 open WebP in the Photos app and Paint. Double-click the file, or right-click and choose Open with. If nothing happens, drag the file into Edge or Chrome to view it.

Mac

Preview and the Finder's Quick Look (press Space on a selected file) display WebP on macOS Big Sur and later. Safari opens it too.

iPhone and iPad

iOS 14 and later display WebP in Safari, Files and Photos. Saving a WebP from a website may keep the format, so apps that don't support it can still refuse it.

Android

Android has supported WebP for years. Google Photos, most gallery apps and Chrome open it directly.

Photoshop and other editors

Adobe Photoshop opens and saves WebP natively from version 23.2 (released in 2022); older versions need a plugin. GIMP, Paint.NET, Affinity Photo and most current editors support it too. If yours doesn't, convert the file to PNG first.

How to convert WebP to JPG or PNG

  1. Open the converter.

Go to kitfuse.pro/webp-to-jpg in any browser.

  2. Add your WebP files.

Drag them in or tap Choose WebP images. Up to 100 at a time.

  3. Pick JPG or PNG.

JPG suits photos and gives small files; PNG keeps transparent backgrounds for logos and stickers.

  4. Download.

Save the files individually or as a ZIP.

On Windows you can also open the WebP in Paint and use File › Save as › JPEG picture; on a Mac, open it in Preview and use File › Export. Those work one file at a time.

Can I stop websites giving me WebP files?

Not reliably. Sites choose the format, and many serve WebP to every browser that supports it. Browser extensions that "save as JPG" exist, but they're one more thing to install and trust. Converting after downloading is simpler and keeps the original if you ever need it.

Things to know before converting

  • Animated WebP becomes a still image in JPG or PNG (the first frame).
  • Transparency survives only in PNG; JPG fills it with white or a color you choose.
  • File size usually goes up, because WebP is more efficient than JPG and PNG. That's expected.
  • Copyright doesn't change with the format. Converting an image you saved from a website doesn't give you the right to reuse it.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open a WebP file?

The app you're using doesn't support the format. Open it in a browser to view it, or convert it to JPG or PNG to use it elsewhere.

Is WebP a safe file format?

Yes. It's an ordinary image format, like JPG. As with any file, keep your browser and apps updated.

How do I save a WebP image as JPG?

Download it, then convert it with a WebP to JPG converter, or open it in Paint or Preview and export as JPEG.

Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?

The image is re-encoded, but at 90 percent quality the difference isn't visible. Converting to PNG instead loses nothing further.

Can I convert WebP files on my phone?

Yes. The converter works in Safari and Chrome on phones; save the results to your photos or files.
