Quick answer

To crop an image, add a photo and drag the box over the part you want to keep. Pull the corners to resize it, or choose a ratio such as 1:1 for profile pictures or 16:9 for video thumbnails. For exact sizes, type the width and height in pixels. Press Crop and download to save.

How to crop a photo

  1. Add a photo.

Drag it onto the page or press Choose a photo. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and AVIF all work.

  2. Pick an aspect ratio.

Leave it on Free, or choose a preset such as 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 or 9:16. Original keeps the photo's own shape.

  3. Position the crop box.

Drag inside the box to move it, and drag its corners or edges to resize it. You can also type exact values in Width, Height, X and Y.

  4. Save the cropped image.

Choose another output format if you like, then press Crop and download.

Which aspect ratio to use when you crop

The shape of a picture matters as much as what's in it, because most apps cut off anything that doesn't fit. These are the ratios people need most often:

  • 1:1 Square: profile pictures, product photos and posts on many social networks.
  • 4:5: portrait posts on Instagram, which take up more room in the feed than squares.
  • 16:9: YouTube thumbnails, presentation slides, desktop wallpapers and website banners.
  • 9:16 Story: Stories, Reels, TikTok videos and phone wallpapers.
  • 4:3 and 3:2: the classic shapes of compact cameras and DSLRs, and of standard photo prints.

Once a picture has the right shape, the image resizer can scale it to an exact size, such as 1080 × 1080 pixels.

Full resolution, no hidden downscaling

The preview is scaled to fit your screen, but the crop is cut from the original pixels. Crop a 4,000 × 3,000 photo to 1:1 and you get a 3,000 × 3,000 image. The label in the corner of the box always shows the real output size. Photos from phones are turned upright before you start, so what you see is what you get.

Precise cropping with the keyboard and number fields

Click the crop box and use the arrow keys to nudge it. Hold Shift to move in bigger steps, or Alt (Option on a Mac) to make the box larger or smaller. The Width, Height, X and Y fields take exact pixel values, which helps when a form asks for a particular size or when you need to crop several screenshots to exactly the same area.

Formats, quality and privacy

By default the cropped image is saved in the same format as the original. HEIC photos are saved as JPG, because many apps can't open HEIC. You can also pick JPG, PNG or WebP yourself and set the quality for JPG and WebP, which starts at 92 percent. PNG keeps transparent areas. The saved image contains no EXIF data, so the location and camera details of the original aren't copied across. To hide part of a photo instead of cutting it off, use Blur image.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop a picture to a square?

Choose 1:1 Square. The largest square that fits is placed in the middle of the photo. Drag it to the part you want, then press Crop and download.

Can I crop an image to an exact pixel size?

Yes. Type the width and height into the number fields. If you need the result larger than the crop area, use the image resizer afterwards.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

Cropping keeps the original pixels, but the image is saved again, so the quality setting applies to JPG and WebP. At the default 92 percent the difference isn't visible. Choose PNG for a lossless copy.

Can I crop HEIC photos from an iPhone?

Yes. HEIC photos open in the cropper and are saved as JPG by default, which works everywhere.

Can I crop several images at once?

This tool crops one photo at a time, so you can frame each one properly. For batches that all need the same size, the image resizer has a Fill and crop the edges option.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is opened and cropped in your browser and never leaves your device.
