Quick answer
To remove metadata from a video, add the MP4, MOV or WebM file to KitFuse and press Clean metadata. KitFuse wipes the GPS location, recording dates, device details and other tags inside the file without re-encoding, so the picture and sound stay identical. Videos up to 2 GB are supported.
How to remove GPS and metadata from a video
- Choose your videos.
Drag MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV files onto the page, or pick them from your gallery. Several videos can be cleaned at once.
- Check the findings.
KitFuse lists the metadata in each video, such as location, recording date, phone model and software. A red badge means the video reveals where it was recorded.
- Clean and save.
Press Clean metadata. The new file is checked again, marked Clean and ready to download or share.
What metadata is stored in a video?
Video files are containers. Alongside the video and audio streams, phones and cameras save a surprising amount of information:
- Location: iPhones store GPS coordinates in Apple's QuickTime metadata, and Android phones in a location tag. Both can pinpoint where you pressed record.
- Dates: creation and modification times in several places inside the file.
- Device and software: make, model, operating system version and the app or encoder used.
- Titles, comments and tags added by editing apps.
- Telemetry tracks: action cameras such as GoPro record GPS, speed and motion as a separate data track for the whole clip.
Why KitFuse doesn't re-encode your video
Many tools remove video metadata by converting the whole file, which takes time, drains your battery and lowers quality. KitFuse leaves the audio and video data alone. It finds the metadata inside the file and replaces it with empty padding of the same size, so the file layout stays valid and every frame is untouched. Because it only reads the parts that matter, even a long 4K recording is cleaned in seconds and doesn't need to fit in your phone's memory.
Want the sound gone too? Use Remove audio from video, which can strip metadata at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
Does removing metadata reduce video quality?
No. KitFuse doesn't re-encode the video. The picture and sound are copied exactly, and only the metadata is wiped.
What is the maximum video size?
Up to 2 GB per video on a computer and 1 GB on a phone or tablet. That covers several minutes of 4K video from a modern phone.
Does it work with iPhone videos?
Yes. iPhone MOV and MP4 videos, including HEVC, are supported, and the location stored by the Camera app is removed. Your browser doesn't even need to be able to play the video.
Do social networks remove video location?
Large networks usually strip metadata from the public copy, but the original file is uploaded first, and files sent by email, cloud links or as documents in messaging apps keep everything. Cleaning first is the safe option.
