Quick answer

To convert JPG to PNG, add your JPG or JPEG files and keep PNG selected. Each image is converted as soon as you add it. PNG is lossless, so the picture looks exactly like the JPG and won't lose quality when you edit and save it again. Download the PNGs one by one or as a ZIP.

How to convert JPG images to PNG

  1. Add your JPG images.

Drag them onto the page or press Choose JPG images. JPEG, WebP and HEIC files work too.

  2. Keep PNG selected.

The quality slider is hidden, because PNG is lossless. Nothing else needs changing.

  3. Download the PNG files.

Download each image, or press Download all (ZIP).

When you need a PNG instead of a JPG

Some websites, apps and print services ask for PNG files specifically. Designers often prefer PNG while they work, because every JPG save throws away a little detail, while a PNG can be opened, edited and saved as many times as you like without getting worse. PNG is also the usual format for screenshots, icons and images you plan to add transparency to later.

What converting JPG to PNG can and can't do

Converting to PNG stops further quality loss, but it can't bring back detail the JPG has already lost: a blurry or blocky JPG becomes an equally blurry PNG. Converting also doesn't make the background transparent by itself, because a JPG has no transparency to keep. You'd need to remove the background in an editor for that. What you do get is an exact, lossless copy of the image as it looks now.

Why PNG files are bigger

JPG was designed for photos and gets its small sizes by discarding detail the eye rarely notices. PNG stores every pixel exactly, so a PNG of a photo is often three to six times larger than the JPG. That's normal. If file size matters more than lossless quality, keep the JPG, or try WebP, which supports transparency and is much smaller. To shrink an existing PNG, the image compressor can reduce its colors, much like TinyPNG.

Private batch conversion

You can convert up to 100 images at once, and each one is processed on your device as soon as you add it. Photos from your phone are turned upright automatically, and their EXIF data, including the GPS location, isn't copied to the PNG. Nothing is uploaded, stored or seen by anyone. For other formats, use the full image converter.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. It keeps the current quality exactly, but it can't restore detail the JPG has already lost. The benefit is that no further quality is lost when you edit and save.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG is lossless and stores every pixel, while JPG compresses photos by discarding fine detail. A PNG of a photo is often several times larger, and that's expected.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. JPG images have no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. Making the background transparent needs a background remover.

Is JPEG the same as JPG?

Yes, they're the same format. Older versions of Windows only allowed three-letter file extensions, so .jpeg became .jpg. Both work here.

How many images can I convert?

Up to 100 at a time, each up to 100 MB.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
