How to rotate a PDF and save it permanently

You turned the page the right way, closed the file, and it's sideways again. Here's why that happens and how to rotate PDF pages so the change is saved in the file itself.

Short answer

To rotate a PDF permanently, change each page's rotation inside the file rather than just the viewer's display. In your browser, open KitFuse Rotate PDF, turn the pages that need it and press Save rotated PDF. On a Mac, rotate in Preview and choose File › Save. On iPhone, rotate pages in the Files app's page thumbnails. The saved file then opens the right way in every app.

Why rotation in your PDF viewer doesn't stick

Most PDF readers offer a "rotate view" button. In Adobe Acrobat Reader it's View › Rotate View, and browsers' built-in PDF viewers have a similar button. These change how the page is displayed in that window only. The file itself isn't touched, so when you reopen it, or send it to someone else, it's sideways again.

A PDF stores a rotation value for every page (0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees). To fix a sideways scan for good, that value has to be changed and the file saved. Doing it this way is lossless: nothing is redrawn, text stays selectable, and the file size barely changes.

Rotate a PDF and save it, in any browser

  1. Open Rotate PDF.

Go to kitfuse.pro/rotate-pdf and add your file. Every page appears as a thumbnail.

  2. Rotate the pages that need it.

Use the arrows under a page to turn it 90 degrees left or right; press twice for 180. Use Rotate all left or Rotate all right to turn every page.

  3. Save.

Press Save rotated PDF. The new file is saved with -rotated in its name; links, bookmarks and form fields are kept.

How to rotate a PDF permanently on a Mac

  1. Open the PDF in Preview and choose View › Thumbnails.
  2. Select the page or pages (hold Cmd to select several).
  3. Choose Tools › Rotate Left or Rotate Right (Cmd + L / Cmd + R).
  4. Choose File › Save. Preview writes the rotation into the file.

How to rotate PDF pages on iPhone and iPad

  2. Swipe from the left edge (or tap the sidebar button) to show page thumbnails.
  3. Touch and hold a page thumbnail and choose Rotate Left or Rotate Right.
  4. Tap Done. The change is saved in the file.

How to rotate a PDF on Windows and Android

Windows and Android don't include a tool that saves PDF rotation. Adobe Acrobat can do it in its Organize Pages view, which is part of the paid product; the free Reader only rotates the view. The browser method above works on both systems without installing anything and keeps the document on your device.

Rotate only some pages, or fix a mixed scan

Double-sided scans often come out with every second page upside down, and reports often have one landscape table in the middle. You only need to turn those pages. In Rotate PDF, rotated pages get a small arrow next to their number, so you can check before saving. If you also need to move or remove pages, Organize PDF combines rotating, reordering and deleting in one view, and Delete PDF pages removes blank backs in a click.

Portrait vs landscape: what rotation actually changes

Rotating a page by 90 degrees turns a portrait page into a landscape one when viewed, without resizing anything. If a page is sideways because the scanner fed it the wrong way, a 90-degree turn fixes it. If the page content itself is a landscape table placed on a portrait page, rotating the page is still the right fix: readers will see the table the right way up and can rotate their device or screen if needed. Rotation doesn't crop, scale or reflow content.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my PDF go back to sideways after I rotate it?

You probably used a "rotate view" button, which changes only the display. Save the rotation into the file with a tool like Rotate PDF or Mac Preview.

Can I rotate just one page in a PDF?

Yes. In Rotate PDF, use the arrows under that page only. In Preview or the iPhone Files app, select just that page before rotating.

Does rotating a PDF reduce its quality?

No. Rotation changes a setting on each page; nothing is re-rendered or compressed.

Can I rotate a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?

Yes. Mac Preview, the iPhone Files app and browser tools all save rotation for free.

Will links and form fields still work?

Yes. KitFuse edits the original document in place, so links, bookmarks, form fields and document properties are kept.
